This article is part of: Bohinj, Slovenia in THE OVERLOOKED NEIGHBOR
Lake Bled is famous: the church on the island, the rowing boats, Instagram-famous photographs. It's also packed with tourists during peak season.
Lake Bohinj is 30km away, in the same region, equally beautiful, significantly less touristy. If you come to Slovenia wanting alpine lakes and outdoor activity (swimming, hiking, canyoning), Bohinj is the better choice.
Bled: Church, island, rowboats, gift shops, tour groups, Instagram-famous.
Bohinj: Less famous, wilder, more hiking access, better swimming, adventure sports (canyoning, kayaking).
Both are alpine lakes in the Julian Alps. Both are beautiful. Bled prioritizes beauty-as-photograph. Bohinj prioritizes beauty-as-experience.
Swimming
Bohinj Lake is swimmable (unlike some alpine lakes which are too cold). Summer water: 16–20°C (61–68°F).
Vogel Beach (Ribčev Laz area): The main beach. Entry free. Rental of umbrellas/loungers ($3–5 (€2.8–€4.7)). Shower facilities. Swim in fresh water, surrounded by mountains.
Savica Waterfall Beach: Smaller, less crowded beach with a waterfall nearby (15-minute hike from the beach). More scenic, fewer people.
Cost: Free to swim, parking $3–5/day.
Hiking
Multiple trails radiate from Bohinj, ranging from 1-hour walks to full-day alpine treks.
Savica Waterfall hike (45 minutes one-way, easy): Short waterfall hike, stunning fall on moss-covered rocks.
Ojstrica viewpoint hike (1 hour from main road, moderate): Panoramic views of Lake Bohinj and the surrounding mountains.
Triglav National Park trails (multiple options, 4–8 hours): Full-day alpine hiking with mountain scenery.
Cost: Free (no permit for day hikes).
Canyoning (The Activity That Defines Bohinj)
Canyoning is hiking through a river canyon, climbing waterfalls, jumping into pools, rappelling.
Sopotnica Creek Canyoning: Half-day ($45–60 per person) or full-day ($70–90 per person) tour. Professional guides, equipment provided (helmet, harness, rope). Moderate difficulty (beginners can do it).
What to expect: Climbing 10–15-meter waterfalls using ropes, jumping into pools (optional, some jumps are mandatory), swimming through tight canyons.
Best for: Adventure-seekers, swimmers, those who like "extreme lite" activities.
Cost: $50–90, depending on length and company.
Kayaking
Rent a kayak ($15–25/hour) and paddle the lake. Quieter than hiking. Access to coves and inlets that aren't visible from the shore.
Hotels/guesthouses: $40–70/night. Mostly family-run. Not fancy but comfortable.
Food: Slovenian food (hearty, meat-focused). Restaurants around the lake serve trout, mushroom stews, local bread. Mains $10–15.
Camping: $15–25/night. Bohinj has multiple campgrounds. If budget-focused, this is excellent value.
Total activity cost: $95 | **Total food/accommodation:** $150–200 (3 nights @ $50 + meals $30/day)
From Ljubljana: 1.5 hours by car ($30–50 rental for the day). Or: bus from Ljubljana to Bohinj (2 hours, $8–12), then local transport to accommodation.
From Bled: 30 minutes by bus ($3) or 20 minutes by car.
If doing both: Bled (1–2 days) → Bohinj (2–3 days) is a natural progression.
Bohinj isn't famous because it's wilder and requires effort. There's no Instagram church on an island. There's no rowboat culture. There's just a lake, mountains, and activities.
If you want alpine beauty and are okay skipping the famous photo op, Bohinj is better. If you came to Slovenia specifically for the Bled church photo, you'll regret skipping Bled.
Most travelers who've done both say Bohinj was more rewarding — more swimming, more hiking, more actual experience of the landscape.
If you want to swim, hike, and do adventure sports in alpine Slovenia, Bohinj delivers better than Bled's Instagram focus.
