This article is part of: Galle, Sri Lanka in THE LONG EXHALE
Galle is accessible and simple once you understand the logistics. The complexity comes not from difficulty but from the absence of Western-style tourism infrastructure. No Booking.com might list every property. No companies operate scheduled tours. You're booking accommodations directly with families running guesthouses and arranging transport through local operators.
This is actually easier than it sounds. Here's the sequence.
Colombo is the main international hub. Flights from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are regular. From North America, you'll typically connect through Middle Eastern hubs (Doha, Dubai) or Southeast Asian ones (Bangkok, Singapore).
Flight booking sites: Skyscanner, Google Flights, or direct with airlines like Emirates, Qatar, SriLankan Airlines.
Typical routes:
London → Colombo: ~10–12 hours (with connections), $450–700
NYC → Colombo: ~16–20 hours (with connections), $700–1,000
Singapore → Colombo: 3.5 hours, $100–200
Bangkok → Colombo: 3 hours, $80–150
Book 6–8 weeks ahead. Sri Lanka doesn't have a heavy long-haul flight market, so prices are consistent rather than spiking seasonally.
Option A: Galle Only (5–7 Days)
Fly to Colombo, train/bus directly to Galle, spend 5–7 days, return to Colombo for the flight out. Straightforward.
Option B: Colombo + Galle (8–10 Days)
Spend 2 nights in Colombo (colonial neighborhoods, good restaurants, chaos to acclimatize to), then 5–7 nights in Galle.
Option C: Multi-Region (10–14 Days)
Colombo → Galle → Ella (mountain tea estates and hiking) → back to Colombo. This works well if you have time.
Most travelers should do Option B: quick Colombo introduction, then Galle for the actual experience.
You need a 1-night layover when you land and possibly another night before flying out. Book a small hotel in Colombo's Galle Face or Colombo 7 neighborhoods (colonial, tree-lined, fewer tuk-tuks).
Budget: $20–30/night
Mid-range: $40–60/night
Splurge: $80–120/night
Sites: Booking.com, Agoda, or direct phone calls to hotels (Sri Lankan hotels often prefer direct booking).
Recommendation: Asia Tradewinds (mid-range, $50/night, has staff that can arrange onward transport to Galle) or similar family-run properties.
This is where you'll spend the bulk of time. Book directly with guesthouses or small hotels in the old fort.
Finding properties:
Booking.com (limited but reliable listings)
Agoda (more Sri Lankan properties listed here)
Direct Google search "Galle guesthouse" → call the number
Email addresses found on guesthouse websites
Recommended properties by budget:
Most travelers: Stay mid-range ($35–50/night). You get a private room, atmosphere, and a knowledgeable host.
Booking directly: Call or email. Say:
"I'm interested in staying [dates] for [number of nights]."
"Do you have availability?"
"What's the nightly rate and what does it include?"
"How do I pay?" (Usually bank transfer or PayPal.)
Most guesthouses respond within 24 hours. Confirm via email once booked.
Option A: Train (recommended)
Depart: Colombo Fort Railway Station, ~8:45 AM
Arrive: Galle, ~12:30 PM (approximately)
Cost: $2–3 (for locals) or $5–10 (tourist rate)
Duration: 3.5 hours
Experience: Scenic, slower, filled with locals
How to book:
Reserve 1–2 days before at the train station, or book through your Colombo hotel concierge ($1 commission). The Colombo → Galle coastal train is famous for being scenic. Sit on the right side of the train for ocean views.
Option B: Bus
Depart: Multiple times daily, ~7:00 AM–4:00 PM
Arrive: Galle, ~1 PM–5 PM depending on traffic
Cost: $3–5
Duration: 2.5–3.5 hours
Companies: SLTB (state), various private operators
How to book:
Day-of at the bus station in Colombo or ask your hotel to book ahead. Less scenic but faster.
Option C: Private Driver
Cost: $30–50 for the day
Duration: 3 hours, possibly with a stop for photos
Convenience: Door-to-door, flexible timing
Your Colombo hotel can arrange this. Good if you want flexibility or are traveling with someone.
Recommendation: Take the train if you're not exhausted from the flight. It's the experience.
For the journey back to Colombo for your international flight:
Book a train or bus the day before your international departure. Early morning (7:00–8:00 AM) departure gets you to Colombo by noon.
If your international flight is evening, an early departure works. If it's morning, you'll need to either:
Leave Galle the day before and overnight in Colombo
Book a very early bus (5:30 AM departure)
Reality check: Galle is 3 hours from Colombo. If your flight is at 3:00 PM, you can't make it from Galle. Plan for a Colombo overnight.
You don't need transport in Galle itself — it's a walkable fort. Hire a tuk-tuk ($3–5) if you want to visit beaches outside the fort or the Japanese peace pagoda (30 minutes away).
Ask your guesthouse about tuk-tuk recommendations. Prices are negotiable.
