This article is part of: Lord Howe Island, Australia in NOT ON THE ALGORITHM
Lord Howe Island limits visitors through a booking system. You don't reserve a spot on the island itself; you book accommodation. Accommodation books out months ahead during peak season.
The tourism is managed entirely through the island's own governance. There's no official website for "booking the island." You book accommodation, and that's your entry.
Step 1: Accommodation First
There are roughly 60 accommodations on the island (guesthouses, holiday rentals, small hotels). None are large. Most have 4–8 rooms.
You book a guesthouse or rental. Once you have booking confirmation, you can proceed with flights.
Step 2: Accommodation Booking Timeline
September 2025 for April–May 2026 peak dates (6–7 months ahead)
January 2026 for June–August 2026 dates (5–6 months ahead)
Peak season (September–November, March–May) books out fastest
Off-season (June–August) has more availability
Step 3: Flights
Lord Howe Airport accepts only small planes (< 36 seats). There's one main airline: QantasLink (via Eastern Australia Airlines).
Flights are:
Sydney–Lord Howe: 2 hours, $350–500 (A$550–A$780) round trip
Limited to 2–4 flights per day
Book 2–3 months ahead (they fill)
Step 4: Visitor Registration
Once you have accommodation + flights, you'll receive a visitor registration form from the island council. You complete it and submit. This confirms your 400-visitor-spot allocation.
The registration is a formality once you have accommodation, but it must be completed before arrival.

You don't "apply" to visit. You book accommodation. The island caps total accommodation to roughly 400 guests. Once accommodation books out, you can't visit (no more spots available).
This means:
Peak dates fill 6–7 months ahead
Shoulder season books 3–4 months ahead
Off-season (cooler months) often has last-minute availability
If you're flexible on dates, you can often get in 2–3 months ahead. If you want specific dates in peak season, book 6+ months ahead.
The island's government caps accommodation supply intentionally. This protects:
Coral in the lagoon (fewer swimmers = less damage)
Endemic bird populations (fewer people = less disturbance)
Fish populations (fewer snorkelers = less stress)
Overall infrastructure (no building of big hotels)
The result: a place that genuinely feels undeveloped.
