This article is part of: Luang Prabang, Laos in THE LONG EXHALE
Laos doesn't have the digital infrastructure of Southeast Asian neighbors. There's no centralized booking system. Flights operate at variable schedules. Ferries run when they run. This sounds chaotic — and it is, in a way that makes the place feel real.
Here's the order to execute a Laos trip without getting stuck.
US, EU, UK, Australian citizens: Laos e-visa (laosevisa.gov.la) or visa on arrival.
E-visa: $50 USD (+ processing fees), takes 2–3 business days. Apply online. You get a PDF, print it, present it at arrival.
Visa on arrival: $35 USD, obtained at Vientiane or Luang Prabang airports. Need passport-size photo (bring extra) and completed TM.8 form (available at airport).
Reality: E-visa is more secure if you're traveling soon. Visa on arrival is fine if you're relaxed about time.
Processing time: Allow 3 weeks minimum for e-visa, or just get on-arrival visa.
Vientiane (Wattay International Airport, VTE) is the main hub, though Luang Prabang (LPB) also receives international flights.
Route options:
Booking: Use Skyscanner, Google Flights, or direct with airlines. Prices are lower in shoulder season (May–July, September–October). Peak season (November–February) adds 40–50% to fares.
Tip: If you're already in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket), short flights to Laos are cheap and quick.
This is the pivotal choice. Vientiane → Luang Prabang can be done three ways.
Option A: Mekong River Slow Boat (2 Days)
Departure: 7:00–8:00 AM daily from Vientiane pier
Arrival: Luang Prabang, late afternoon Day 2
Cost: $15–20
What it is: A wooden bench in an open boat, moving at 8 km/h for 8 hours per day
This isn't comfort travel. But it's the experience most travelers take for a reason — the Mekong at river level is genuinely hypnotic.
Book at your Vientiane guesthouse or directly at the pier the day before.
Option B: Bus (10–12 Hours, Night Option)
Depart: 6:00–7:00 PM Vientiane
Arrive: 5:00–6:00 AM Luang Prabang
Cost: $12–15
What it is: A sleeper bus with narrow berths. Not comfortable, but functional.
Companies: Thabok Transport, Mekong Travel.
Book 1–2 days ahead at travel agencies in Vientiane.
Option C: Flight (1 Hour)
Depart: Multiple times daily
Arrive: Same day, 1.5 hours after takeoff
Cost: $50–80
Airlines: Lao Airlines (state airline), Vietjet Air, Cambojet
Book 3–4 weeks ahead for best prices.
The Decision Tree:
Want the experience + have time:
Slow boat (2 days, $20)
Want sleep + efficiency:
Night bus (1 night, $15)
Want comfort + speed:
Flight ($65)
Most burned-out professionals do the slow boat once, then fly if they ever repeat Laos.
Vientiane: (1–2 nights, mostly a transit hub)
Budget: $8–15/night. Hua Khong Guesthouse, Vilanesee Guesthouse
Mid-range: $20–35/night. Lani Guesthouse, Apsara Boutique Hotel
Sites: Booking.com, Agoda (Asia-specific, sometimes cheaper)
Luang Prabang: (4–7 nights minimum)
Budget: $10–20/night. 3 Nagas, Oasis Rooms
Mid-range: $30–50/night. Sofitel, Mekong Riverview
Splurge: $100–180/night. Villa Santi, Sanctuary
Book Luang Prabang accommodation as soon as dates are confirmed — it's smaller and fills fast in high season.
Cooking class: Book through your hotel concierge or directly with schools like Bumbu Bakery or Anika's. Cost $15–25. Usually 4–5 hours. No need to pre-book more than a few days ahead.
Mekong slow boat day trip: Book at hotel or directly at pier ($8–12). No pre-booking needed.
Kuang Si Waterfall trip: Full day, $15–20 with guide through hotel. Or DIY with a rented scooter ($5–8/day).
If you're Laos → Thailand:
Vientiane → Bangkok: Cross at Nong Khai (Thai border). If taking slow boat, you naturally pass through Nong Khai. Get Thai visa/visa-on-arrival before departure.
If you're Laos → Vietnam:
Vientiane → Hanoi: Bus (12 hours, $12–15) or flight ($60–90). Vietnam visa typically requires pre-purchase.
