This article is part of: Oaxaca, Mexico in EAT THE PLANE TICKET
Oaxaca is one of the few places where $45 a day gets you more than hostel bunks and street tacos. You'll eat like a local and sleep in a room with character.
Accommodation ($15–25/night): Skip the hostels unless you want the social scene. Small guesthouses like Casa de las Bugambilias or La Biznaga offer private rooms with courtyard breakfast for $20–25. Further from the zócalo, $15 gets you clean and simple.
Food ($18–25/day): Breakfast: Memelas at Mercado 20 de Noviembre ($2–3). Lunch: Tlayuda at a comedor ($4–6). Dinner: Mole tasting at a family-run spot ($6–8). Coffee and mezcal: $5. The math works — and you're eating some of the best food in Mexico.
Getting around ($2–5/day): Walk. Oaxaca's centro is compact. Colectivos to Monte Albán or the textile villages cost $1–2 each way.
The catch? Skip July and August unless you love rain. November (Día de Muertos) is magical but prices creep up. March and April are the sweet spot.
