Raja Ampat is the world's most biodiverse marine ecosystem. 75% of coral species globally live here. 1,300+ fish species. Manta rays, sharks, sea turtles, dolphins. The underwater landscape is alien — steep walls, caves, channels. Divers call it the last untouched coral garden.
Getting there requires commitment. The islands are off the western coast of New Guinea. Infrastructure is minimal. Liveaboard dive boats are the main way to explore. But if you dive (or are willing to learn), Raja Ampat is a pilgrimage destination.
The reef is also increasingly fragile. Climate change and fishing pressure are affecting even this remote place. Visiting now, while it's intact, is a form of environmental witness.
Liveaboard diving (7–10 days): Half or full-day dives from boat. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner onboard. $1,200–2,000 per week all-inclusive. Operator recommendations matter (research reviews carefully).
Manta ray encounters: Some liveaboards position for manta rays (seasonal, August–October). Encounter is not guaranteed but possible.
Shore-based diving (budget alternative): Some islands have dive shops offering day trips ($60–100 per dive) instead of liveaboard commitment.
Snorkeling: Non-divers can snorkel some reefs (cheaper than diving). $30–50 per trip.
Budget:: Guesthouses in Sorong (gateway city). $20–35/night. Requires day trips from main islands.
Mid-Range:: Island guesthouses or small resorts. $40–70/night. Shore-based diving available.
Splurge:: Liveaboard dive boats (comfort and convenience included). $150–250/night all-inclusive.
Fish (fresh): Caught daily, grilled or steamed. $5–10 at restaurants.
Coconut rice: Rice cooked in coconut milk. $2–4.
Papaya and tropical fruit: Abundant and fresh. Markets $0.50–2.
Instant noodles: Widely available; budget fallback. $0.30–0.50.
Bottled water: Necessary; tap water is not reliable. $0.50–1 per bottle.
Getting there
Fly to Jakarta or Surabaya, domestic flight to Sorong (gateway city), boat to islands
Daily budget
$50–80 per day on liveaboard ($1,200–2,000 for 7 days all-inclusive)
Best time
October–April (dry season, better visibility)
Liveaboard operators vary wildly in quality and ethics. Research environmental practices (responsible diving, coral protection). Price correlates somewhat with quality and comfort. Certification is required; most operators offer PADI Open Water ($300–400) during first few days of dive trip. The reefs are not infinite; practice respectful diving (no touching, no stepping on coral). Sorong is the gateway; prepare yourself for a less-developed town before heading to islands.
