The Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona has been under construction since 1883 — 143 years. Gaudí's original vision is finally nearing completion. The interior will be fully finished by 2026–2030, and the exterior is largely complete now.
Gaudí died in 1926, having overseen only 15 years of construction. For over a century, the basilica remained a work-in-progress — cranes visible, scaffolding present, the structure constantly evolving. By 2030, it will be a finished building.
The experience of visiting a 140-year-old construction site is unique to now. You can see both the completed sections (ornate Gothic-meets-modernist architecture) and active construction. In 5–10 years, the construction phase will be historical. Visit while it's still becoming.
Sagrada Familia interior and exterior walk: Tour the basilica. Entry $35–45. Climb the towers for close-up views (additional fee $5). 2–3 hours minimum. See the construction actively happening.
Gaudí other buildings tour: Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell, Gaudí House Museum. Each $20–35 entry. Full day of Gaudí architecture.
Barcelona Gothic Quarter walk: Medieval narrow streets, ancient Roman walls, Barcelona Cathedral. Free to walk. 2–3 hours.
Montjuïc views and museums: Hilltop area with city views, museums, art galleries. Free to walk, museums $10–20 entry each.
Budget:: Hostels in Eixample or Gothic Quarter. $25–40/night.
Mid-Range:: Hotels in Eixample or Gothic Quarter. $55–90/night.
Splurge:: Luxury hotels or boutique properties. $120–200/night.
Escalivada: Grilled vegetables. $6–10.
Esqueixada: Salted cod with tomato and olive oil. $8–12.
Fideuà: Similar to paella but made with noodles instead of rice. $12–18.
Crema Catalana: Catalan custard dessert with caramelized sugar top. $4–6.
Vermouth and tapas: Local aperitif culture. Vermouth $1–3 per glass, tapas $2–6.
Getting there
Fly to Barcelona; direct flights from most major cities
Daily budget
$55–100 (accommodation $35–70, food $15–25, basilica entry $35, transport $5)
Visit the Sagrada Familia early (8–9 AM) to avoid crowds. The entry fee gets you access to both interior and one tower; additional tower ($5 more) gives you close-up views of the active construction. Gaudí buildings are expensive separately; consider a Gaudí pass ($120) for entry to 6 properties. The basilica's completion is both a reason to visit and secondary to Barcelona's other charms. Winter (November–February) has fewer tourists and is cheaper.
