Delhi is India's capital and notorious for overstimulation. Jaipur — 250km southwest — is the Pink City (buildings painted terracotta pink). It's a planned city on a grid (unusual for India), has a palace, a fort, bazaars, and textile workshops.
Jaipur feels more manageable than Delhi. The old city is walkable. Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) is an iconic facade. Jantar Mantar (astronomical instrument complex) is UNESCO-listed. City Palace is still partially royal residence. Markets sell textiles, spices, precious stones.
The reason to come is textile workshops. You can watch block-printing, weaving, and natural dyeing. Many workshops sell directly to visitors at lower prices than retail shops. A day visiting 2–3 workshops, seeing the process, and purchasing directly is a good use of time.
Food is exceptional — dal, curries, Indian breads. Prices are a quarter of Western countries.
Old City walk: Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) facade, Jantar Mantar (astronomical instruments), City Palace. Entry fees $3–8 per site. 2–3 hours walking.
Textile workshop visits: Block-printing, weaving, natural dyeing. Many open to visitors. Free to watch, purchase optional. 1–2 hours per workshop.
City Palace and gardens: Partially royal residence. $8–12 entry. Ornate and opulent. 1–2 hours.
Bazaar exploration: Markets selling textiles, spices, jewelry. Haggling expected. Free to walk. Budget $10–20 if buying. 2–3 hours.
Budget:: Guesthouses and hostels. $10–15/night. City center or near old city.
Mid-Range:: Small hotels and upgraded guesthouses. $25–40/night.
Splurge:: Heritage hotel or upscale resort. $80–150/night.
Dal makhani: Creamy lentil curry. Restaurant staple. $3–6.
Tandoori chicken: Marinated and clay-oven cooked. Served with bread. $5–10.
Palak paneer: Spinach and cheese curry. Vegetarian. $3–6.
Naan: Indian flatbread. $0.50–1 per piece.
Jaipur sweets: Various regional sweets (barfi, halwa). Markets $1–2 per piece.

Textile workshops are the main draw; hire a guide or ask at your hotel for trusted workshop recommendations. Many workshops pressure you to buy (pressure is moderate, not aggressive). Watch the process even if you don't buy. Hawa Mahal is iconic but crowded; go at opening time or late afternoon. Bazaars sell quality goods but expect aggressive haggling (it's part of the culture). Ride-sharing apps work in Jaipur; use them instead of negotiating with taxi drivers. Indian food is exceptional here; eat multiple times per day.
