Hawai'i (Big Island)

White Lotus Season 1 filmed on the Big Island, and Jurassic Park filmed here decades earlier. The Big Island is the youngest Hawaiian island (still volcanically active) and has the most diverse landscape — lava fields, snow-capped mountains, tropical valleys, black sand beaches, and green sand beaches.

The island works as a road trip. You can drive from snow (Mauna Kea summit, 13,796 feet) to tropical beaches in 30 minutes. You can watch lava flow into the ocean. You can hike through a volcano crater. You can snorkel with tropical fish. You can visit coffee plantations and macadamia nut farms.

The reason people revisit the Big Island is the landscape diversity. It feels like multiple destinations on one island, and you get the sense that you're not just tourist-ing — you're actually moving through distinct ecosystems.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park: Drive into a volcano crater, hike through lava fields, walk the Crater Rim Trail. $30 entry per car. Crater views, Thurston Lava Tube walk (30 minutes), Chain of Craters Road scenic drive. Full day activity.

Mauna Kea summit drive: Drive to 13,796 feet for sunset, then stay for stars. Bring warm clothes (it's cold and windy at altitude). Free except gas. 1–2 hours driving each way from Hilo.

Snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay: Tropical fish, sea turtles, coral. Half-day snorkel tour $50–80. Or drive yourself and enter via boat launch ($20 parking). Best early morning.

Green Sand Beach (Papakōlea): Olivine-rich beach creates green color. Drive to a lot, 2-mile hike to beach. Free. Beach is small but unique. 3–4 hours total.

Budget:: Hostels and small guesthouses in Hilo or Kona. $40–60/night.

Mid-Range:: Hotels or condos. $70–120/night.

Splurge:: Resort or upscale vacation rental. $150–250/night.

Plate lunch: Combination of rice, protein (chicken katsu, kalua pork), and sides. $8–15. Ubiquitous and satisfying.

Fish (ahi, mahi, opah): Fresh-caught fish prepared grilled or poke style. $12–22.

Poke: Raw fish marinated in soy sauce and sesame. Bowl. $8–15.

Kona coffee: World-famous coffee from Kona district. Coffee shops throughout. Cup $2–5.

Macadamia nuts: Local nuts, roasted and salted. Markets $3–8 per bag.
