Harry Potter filmed at Hogwarts Express scenes on the Jacobite Steam Train in the Scottish Highlands. The train runs a real route (Fort William to Mallaig) over real viaducts, and the landscape is genuinely otherworldly — mountains, lochs, glens, mist.
Beyond the Harry Potter connection, the Highlands are the literal definition of "wild landscape." Glen Coe is a dramatic valley with mountains on both sides. Single malts (whisky) come from distilleries throughout the region. Small villages have 300 people and 10 sheep. The pace is slow, the light is moody, and hiking is spectacular.
You can take the Jacobite Train as a touristy box-check or as a genuine experience embedded in a Highlands trip. Three–four days hiking and exploring, with the train ride as one component, is ideal.

Insider Tip
Book the Jacobite train in advance (it sells out). Take it as a one-way trip and enjoy it rather than doing a day-trip round trip. Hiking Ben Nevis or exploring Glen Coe is the real experience; the train is a complement. Whisky distillery tours are good for context but not essential — single malts are available everywhere. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) have fewer tourists and moody weather that enhances the landscape. The Scottish accent is thick; listen carefully but don't be shy about asking to repeat.
