Harry Potter filmed at Hogwarts Express scenes on the Jacobite Steam Train in the Scottish Highlands. The train runs a real route (Fort William to Mallaig) over real viaducts, and the landscape is genuinely otherworldly — mountains, lochs, glens, mist.
Beyond the Harry Potter connection, the Highlands are the literal definition of "wild landscape." Glen Coe is a dramatic valley with mountains on both sides. Single malts (whisky) come from distilleries throughout the region. Small villages have 300 people and 10 sheep. The pace is slow, the light is moody, and hiking is spectacular.
You can take the Jacobite Train as a touristy box-check or as a genuine experience embedded in a Highlands trip. Three–four days hiking and exploring, with the train ride as one component, is ideal.
Jacobite Steam Train ride (Fort William to Mallaig): The iconic Harry Potter Hogwarts Express. 41 miles, 2.5 hours one-way. Runs daily May–September. $42–62 depending on carriage class and time of booking. Book in advance.
Glen Coe hiking: Dramatic valley with multiple trails. The main valley walk (free) is 3 hours round trip and requires no experience. Stob Coire Sam Uidhe is a proper hike (5–6 hours) with mountain scenery. Guides available ($50–80/day) or go solo.
Single malt whisky distillery tour: Glenfinnan, Glen Coe, or Islay distilleries. Tours $15–25, tastings included. 1–2 hours per distillery.
Ben Nevis hike: Britain's highest peak (1,345m). Popular but not overrun. 5–6 hours round trip from Fort William. Free. Hire a guide ($40–60) for bad weather or inexperience.
Budget:: Hostels and bothy stays in Fort William and villages. $20–35/night.
Mid-Range:: Small country hotels and guesthouses. $50–80/night.
Splurge:: Highland lodge or castle hotel. $120–200/night.
Haggis: Sheep organs, oatmeal, and spices in a sheep's stomach. Served with mashed potatoes (neeps and tatties). $8–15. Try it; it's better than it sounds.
Seafood chowder: Made with local catch. Warming and flavorful. $10–15.
Smoked salmon: Scottish salmon, smoked and served with brown bread. $12–18.
Scottish tablet: Fudge-like candy. Markets and shops. $0.50–1.50 per piece.
Whisky: Single malts by region. A dram (1.5 oz) costs $6–15 depending on age/rarity.
Getting there
Fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow, train or bus to Fort William (4–5 hours)
Daily budget
$50–80 (accommodation $30–50, food $12–20, transport $5–10)
Best time
May–September (Jacobite runs April–October; weather most stable June–August)
Book the Jacobite train in advance (it sells out). Take it as a one-way trip and enjoy it rather than doing a day-trip round trip. Hiking Ben Nevis or exploring Glen Coe is the real experience; the train is a complement. Whisky distillery tours are good for context but not essential — single malts are available everywhere. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) have fewer tourists and moody weather that enhances the landscape. The Scottish accent is thick; listen carefully but don't be shy about asking to repeat.
